Diesel generators are a combination of a diesel engine and an alternator to generate electric energy. Industrial generator sets start at around 10kW to 2000 kW (three phase). All the major engine manufacturers offer generator sets from small domestic units to major industrial power stations.

Generator sets are mainly used as back up units in the event of grid failure to provide emergency power.

Generator sets come in the form of open skid mounted sets or in sound attenuated enclosures. In order to remove large generators from site to site they can either be installed in containers or standard road trailers.

Consideration must be given to the rating required from a generator set. Standby power provides energy when main power is interrupted. Prime power allows for a 10 per cent overload capacity for emergencies.

Generator sets are sold by reference to the output specifications that include age, hours, kW, voltage and frequency.
